Surrounded by the sea and mountains, the port town of Mojiko once prospered as a hub of international trade.
Even today, many historic buildings constructed during the town’s heyday remain scattered throughout town, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that makes Mojiko Retro a popular sightseeing spot.

Mojiko Retro boasts a number of attractions, from its many historic buildings and their quaint retro atmosphere, to its beautiful views of the sea and the magnificent Kanmon Straits, its trendy cafés, as well as a nostalgic shopping district with many unique stores, and even one of the largest outlet malls in all of Kyushu, where you could easily spend an entire day shopping.”
Take a stroll through the charming port town of Mojiko and enjoy its classic traditional buildings and townscape, as well as some of the area’s unique local cuisine.”
There’s so much to see and do, and taking a rickshaw or renting a bicycle is a convenient way to get around town.
When you’re ready to take a break, sit back and relax at one of the retro cafés and restaurants housed within the historic buildings themselves.
Enjoy some sweets, a light snack or a meal as you take in the unique atmosphere of the historic Western-style buildings at Matiere, a café found in the former Osaka Merchant Marine building, at Mone de Retro, a café housed in the former Moji Customs House, or the Mitsui Club restaurant in the former Moji Mitsui Club building.
You can also enjoy the open, liberating feel of Kaikyo Plaza, a spacious shopping complex which looks out over the sea.
Inside you will find a number of stores selling home goods, accessories, souvenirs and more, as well as restaurants and cafés with spectacular views, so you can enjoy great food and shopping all in one place.
At Mojiko Retro’s Minato House you will find a market for visitors which sells local seafood from the Kanmon Straits, a selection of take-out foods, and a wide variety of local Kyushu souvenirs.
Don’t forget to try yaki curry (baked curry), a delicious local specialty.
