New Year’s in Kyushu?

In Japan, the period celebrating the arrival of the New Year is called “Oshogatsu.” During Oshogatsu, there are various events and customs to welcome and celebrate Toshigami-sama, the deity of the New Year. Especially during “Sanganichi” (the first three days of the New Year, from January 1st to 3rd), it has long been a tradition to take a break from work, relax your mind and body, and enjoy time with beloved family and relatives. At Oshogatsu, “Osechi-ryori,” traditional Japanese New Year’s dishes packed with auspicious ingredients, adorn the dining table. This is a lovingly prepared preserved food, made in advance so that even busy mothers can relax during the New Year.

On New Year’s Day, many shrines across Japan are bustling with “Hatsumode” (the first shrine visit of the New Year). In the refreshing air, you will surely feel the hopeful beginning of a new year.

Why not come and experience Japan’s warm and wonderful Oshogatsu culture for yourself?
