Admire the captivating colors of the light and experience the healing power of stained glass at the Yufuin Stained Glass Museum

Take a short 15-minute walk from Yufuin Station while admiring the beautiful Mt. Yufu and you will soon come across a brick church.
The church looks and feels as if straight out of England and houses a museum, the first ever dedicated to the art of stained glass in all of Japan. Here you will find antique pieces of stained glass from Europe dating back to the 1800s.
The museum has two buildings: St. Robert Church, where you can enjoy the “jewels of light” created when natural light pours through the many beautiful stained glass windows; and Neil’s House, where you can marvel at the beauty of stained glass through man-made lighting.
In Neil’s House you will find some rare pieces of stained glass artwork by renowned Irish artist Harry Clarke. Protected by law, it is currently illegal to take these precious works of art outside of Japan.
Everything from the building materials used to the carefully selected antique furniture was imported directly from England, and inside you will find many works of art by renowned artists on display.
Marvel at this traditional art form which has continued to shine, preserved for hundreds of years amidst the warmth of a solemn wooden church or from the ambience of an authentic English-style house.

Widely known as an art town, Yufuin has many art museums, places of artistic interest, various hands-on workshops, and sightseeing spots.
Yufuin is of course also known for its hot springs.
One interesting experience is a foot bath where you can get a unique pedicure by what are known as “doctor fish”.
“Doctor fish” are little fish that gather to nibble on the dead skin cells on your hands and feet, leaving your skin nice and smooth.
This fish pedicure is said to promote both good health and beauty. Not only is it a safe way to remove dead skin cells, but the stimulation is also said to benefit the nervous system.
Don’t miss out on this unique experience when you visit the museum!
