Dejima is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Nagasaki.
A place where Japanese and Western culture once came together, Dejima offers both historical and modern-day attractions.
During the country’s 218 years of national isolation, Dejima was Japan’s only window for trade with Western Europe, and played a major role in the modernization of Japan as a center for economic, cultural, and academic exchange.
At Dejima, you will be transported back in time to the turn of the 19th-century as you explore the well-preserved atmosphere of the Chief Factor’s Residence, the former Nagasaki International Club, the Head Clerk’s Quarters, and the former Dejima Protestant Seminary.
The Chief Factor’s Residence was used as the office and residence of the chief factor (kapitan), as well as for receiving Japanese officials and feudal lords when they visited Dejima. The building has become a popular place to take photos thanks to the unique atmosphere created by its Western-style interior and Japanese-style wallpaper.
The former Nagasaki International Club was built to serve as a gathering place where Nagasaki’s Japanese and foreign residents could socialize. The first floor houses a restaurant featuring local Nagasaki cuisine.
Here you can enjoy an elegant and comfortable dining experience or tea time amidst the old-fashioned Western-style atmosphere.
On the second floor of the Head Clerk’s Quarters you will find a kimono rental shop, which also offers kimono dressing and hairstyling services.
You can take pictures dressed in kimono to the backdrop of the historic old town, or take a stroll around Dejima and the streets of Nagasaki and create a special memory of your time in Japan.
Next to the former Dejima Protestant Seminary is a Miniature Model of Dejima, which recreates what Dejima would have looked like in the early 19th century.
You can learn more about Dejima by taking a guided tour led by tour guides dressed as traditional gatekeepers.
Located in the Port of Nagasaki’s bay area, Dejima Wharf is a popular spot where you can enjoy a resort-like atmosphere and panoramic views of the harbor and Mount Inasa.
This wooden deck plaza is lined with outdoor restaurant and café seating where you can relax and enjoy the fantastic location on the harbor.
From the observation deck, you can enjoy expansive views of Nagasaki Harbor and Mount Inasa as you bask in the pleasant sea breeze.
Located within JR Nagasaki Station you will find Amu Plaza Nagasaki (Nagasaki Kaido Kamome Market), a shopping area offering some of the best variety of souvenirs in the city. Here you will find a number of shops and restaurants showcasing Nagasaki’s best products, including local sake, delicious food, and more. You can even catch a cooking demonstration where local Nagasaki dishes are prepared right before your eyes!
It is located right in front of the station ticket gate, so be sure to stop by and make the most of every last minute of your trip to Nagasaki!
