如意輪寺(かえる寺)

Nyoirin-ji Temple (Frog Temple), Ogori City, Fukuoka Prefecture: Don’t miss the lovely summer wind chime festival in this “power spot” where countless lucky frogs await!

Seieizan Nyoirin-ji Temple, also known as “Frog Temple,” is decked out from top to bottom with some 10,000 frog statues and decorations, each with their own cute yet funny expressions.
This soothing, comforting temple is also a popular place for taking photos, as you know you’ll always get a good shot no matter where you take it!
The temple is also home to several natural places of healing energy, known in Japan as “power spots”, said to grant visitors safe travels, longevity, and financial prosperity.
The temple came to be known as “Frog Temple” when the chief priest brought a frog figurine back with him from a trip to China, and then continued to add more decorations gradually over time.
The priest wanted to make the temple a fun, open and welcoming place for everyone, and the temple is now known and loved by visitors from overseas as well.
One event you simply cannot miss is the summertime Wind Chime Festival.
Wind chimes are believed to ward off evil spirits, and during the festival you will find thousands of them on display throughout the temple, inscribed with wishes for a safe summer.
The countless wind chimes with their colorful strips of paper swaying in the breeze make for a fantastic, picture-perfect sight!
The cool, refreshing sounds of the wind chimes echo throughout the temple grounds, filled with the wishes of its many visitors.
The wind chimes are on display from June 1 to September 30 (check the official website for exact festival dates), and visitors flock to the temple during this special time of year.
The temple’s main object of worship is the Nyoirin Kannon. This statue is unique in that it is depicted in the standing position rather than its usual seated position, and has been designated as a cultural asset by Fukuoka Prefecture.
It is thought to have been made in the late Heian period because of its refined, elegant appearance.
The term Nyoi means for things to be as one hopes, and this Kannon is said to make everyone’s wishes come true.
The temple grounds also offer different kinds of scenery depending on the season, including cherry blossoms, fresh spring greenery, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves.
Nearby you will also find Tanabata Shrine (Himekoso Shrine) and Oimatsu Shrine (Kengyu Shrine), said to make all your love wishes come true, as well as Sato Villa, a restaurant famous for its duck cuisine and housed in a building which has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The city of Ogori offers plenty of other things to see and do, so be sure to check them out while you’re in the area.
